Go RAW Today

Family Ministries Director: Kay Kuzma; 808-652-1803; kaykuzma@aol.com

Janie and Tom Eisendrath
                                 Go RAW--with LASAGNA
OK, OK, I’ll admit it. I’m not a cook.
“Then why,” I hear you asking, “are you blogging on Raw Lasagna?”
Because my interest was peeked when I got an email from Tom Eisendrath saying he was in 4th heaven after eating Janie’s raw lasagna. He then tempted me with this scrumptious looking picture (of the lasagna--not Janie and Tom).
So I replied, “Don’t tease me…what’s the recipe?” And the recipe below is what Janie sent.
Now, because I’m not even a raw food “cook” somebody’s going to have to try this recipe and invite me over to see how it feels to be in “4th heaven.”
Or better yet, bring it to our Fellowship Meal--and make sure I don’t go through line last!    (Do you think Tom meant "7th heaven"? You'll have to ask him!)

Raw Lasagna Recipe from Erica Palmcrantz and Irmela Lilja, the authors of the book, Raw Food: A Complete Guide for Every Meal of the Day

5 mushrooms of your choice, thinly sliced
1 tbs olive oil
½ tbs tamari
2 zucchini, peeled
1/2 package of spinach
6 tbs (about ½ cup) marinara sauce
1 or 2 avocados, sliced

1.      Marinate the mushrooms in olive oil and tamari for 10 minutes. Remove the excess liquid with a paper towel.
2.     Thinly slice the zucchini, making long noodle shapes using a potato peeler or a knife.
3.      Put the spinach and a little water in a food processor, and pulse until it becomes a sauce. Put the sauce in a bowl.
4.      Cover the bottom of a rectangular baking dish with 2 tablespoons marinara sauce, and put about a third of the zucchini slices on top of the sauce.
5.      Add 2 tablespoons of the marinara sauce and half of the mushrooms, gentle pressing the ingredients down as you go.
6.      Add a third of the zucchini again, half of the avocado slices, and half of the spinach sauce.
7.      Add the last third of the zucchini, and 2 tablespoons of the marinara sauce. Add the rest of the spinach sauce and avocado. Put the last layer of mushrooms on the top of the lasagna.

Marinara Sauce
You can use this as a lasagna sauce, zucchini pasta sauce, or as it’s own side dish.

2 tomatoes                               1 tablespoon fresh basil, or 1 teaspoon dried basil
5-6 sun-dried tomatoes           1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ red bell pepper                    salt, garlic, cayenne pepper to taste
1 teaspoons olive oil

Put all the ingredients in a food processor and blend. This sauce lasts for 3 days in the frige.

Note:  Janie did admit to altering this recipe a little for personal taste. But that's the sign of a great cook. Right?

Let's Celebrate Kids

Angela Kuzma giving Keiki Story: Jan. 18, 2014
This next Sabbath January 25, is going to be an inspiring celebration of children.

1) Our adult Sabbath School lesson is on Discipling Children  (Sabbath School starts at 9:20. You're going to want to study this lesson!)

2) Feryl Harris, Children's Ministries Director of the Hawaii Conference will be giving the sermon on the importance of not missing the opportunities God gives us to advance His work--especially with children.

If you thought Children's Ministries just meant Children's Sabbath School, don't miss Feryl's message. Chances are you'll discover that you have an important role to play in the lives of our church kids--even though you thought you were "retired."

Here's a shocking fact:
By the age of 13, a child's spiritual identity is largely set in place.  (Barna Research)

And here's why you are needed in Children's Ministries . . .
To develop a healthy spiritual identity children need spiritual mentors--and that doesn't just mean Sabbath School teachers and Uncle Brian! You can read more interesting facts about today's kids in George Barna's book, "Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions."

Feryl Harris: Hawaii Conference Children's Ministries
I've known Feryl for years. We were freshman at LaSierra College together and played on the same volleyball team. Now 50 some years later--we're on the same "kid's" team.
Feryl grew up in a small Adventist church in Massachusetts where children of all ages met in one room in the church basement. While resources and space were grossly inadequate, her teacher, Mrs. Perkin's love for kids and  love of Jesus made up for the lack of resources. And the result? Feryl was impressed to devote her life to helping kids become spiritual champions.

YOU can be a "Mrs. Perkins"
 for our Lawai Valley children.

Attend this years children's ministries training weekend on Feb. 7-9 at the Ministries Training Center of the Hawaii Conference on Oahu. You'll hear about new ministry ideas and you'll learn about valuable resources to make your ministry to children more effective. It doesn't matter how many years you've been involved in Children's Ministries, there will be something NEW for you.

So HAND 'N HAND  "Stand UP...Stand OUT...Stand IN"
(that's the name of the conference)

Training begins: Friday: 6pm. with a light supper, and continues on Sabbath from 2 to 6:15.
Register online for this FREE training seminar at hawaiisda.com  or call 808-595-7591.

More about Feryl:
Wherever Feryl and her husband, Mahlon, their daughters, Sherylin and Liesl, have lived, Feryl has been connected with ministry to children, having served on the Island of Taiwan as vocalist for the Chinese Voice of Prophecy, several years at Mountain View Conference in West Virginia in the capacity of Children's Ministries Director, for 20 years on the board of Miracle Meadows School...a school for behaviorally challenged children and now for 10 years in Children's Ministries for the Hawaii Conference. Feryl is also the Trust Services Field Representative for the Conference, so if you're considering giving a lasting legacy to help advance God's work, talk to her while she's here.

Sabbath will be an amazing blessing...starting with Family Praise at 9am.
SEE YOU AT CHURCH!

Think about LOVE

Lawai Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church
Family Ministries Messages
Family Ministries Director: Kay Kuzma; 808-652-1803; kaykuzma@aol.com

Carlos and Nancy Pardeiro, founders of Safe TV,
shared these inspiring thoughts on LOVE.

When men are bound together, not by force or self-interest,
but by LOVE,
they show the working of an influence that is above
every human influence.
Where this oneness exists,
it is evidence that the image of God
is being restored in humanity,
that a new principle of life has been implanted.
It shows that there is power in the divine nature
to withstand the supernatural agencies of evil,
and that the grace of God subdues the selfishness
inherent in the natural heart.

When self is merged in Christ,
love springs forth spontaneously.
The completeness of Christian character
is attained when the impulse to help and bless others
springs constantly from within--
when the sunshine of heaven fills the heart
and is revealed in the countenance.

Connected with Christ,
we are connected with our fellow men
by the golden links of the chain of love.
Then the pity and compassion of Christ will be manifest in our life . . .
It will be as natural for us to minister to the needy
and suffering as it was for Christ to go about doing good.
This love is the evidence of their discipleship . . .

E. G. White: God's Amazing Grace, p. 145.

Questions:

1) What ideas do you have about how members at Lawai Valley
Seventh-day Adventist can more effectively live God's love in Kauai?

2) Do you have examples about how any member of our church (from the youngest to the oldest) may have shared Jesus love in a special way? If so, post your story!

Who Runs Our Church?

Lawai Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church
Family Ministries Messages
Family Ministries Director: Kay Kuzma; 808-652-1803; kaykuzma@aol.com

Hopefully, the Lord Runs Our Church!
But on a practical level, our church administration is as democratic as the members choose to make it. Why? Because the decisions that govern our church are NOT made by one person. Most are made at the monthly Church Board meeting, which is made up of church leaders who are voted into office by church members. BIG decisions, like the annual church budget, are voted on by the entire church membership at specially scheduled Church Business Meetings. The church members attending an official Church Business Meeting represents the highest authority of the local church.

How Does a Church Change?
A church is a training ground for members to use their spiritual gifts, so it’s essential that opportunities are given for every member to participate. Sure, it’s sometimes difficult for serving members to give up their positions so others can have a chance to use their talents. But sometimes the greater difficulty is getting new members to serve! Our goal is that every member have a ministry. That's what makes a healthy church!
So, if you have a great idea, or if you have a suggestion of how something could be improved, don’t just sit there and grumble! If you do, NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE!  Instead . . .
1.      Volunteer. Get involved. Come to church functions. Get to know all the church members.
2.      Let others know what your interests are and how you’d like to use your spiritual gifts.
3.      Attend Church Business Meetings and the monthly Church Board Meeting. Yes, the Board Meeting is open to all members who would like to observe--except when personnel are discussed. It meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. See your church leadership in action!

Who Is On Your Church Board?
The Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual suggests which church offices should be represented on the Church Board. We have twelve members:
Lay Pastor/Head Elder: Brian Tuzon
Elders: Denny Lauama, Mark Arthur
Head Deacon: Lynn Provonsha
Head Deaconess: Lynn Jackson
Treasurer: Stephanie Arthur
Clerk: Charles Steak
Personal Ministries Leader: Denny Lauama
Sabbath School Superintendent: Maria Lytwynic
Family Ministries Leader: Kay Kuzma
Women’s Ministries Leader: Stephanie Arthur
Pathfinder Club Director: Lynn Provonsha
Interest Coordinator: Paulynn Hanief
Health Ministries Leader: Angela Kuzma

What Happens at Church Board?
Here's a sample from January 14, 2014:

Brian Tuzon, our Lay Pastor and Chairman of the Board, gave a devotional based on the Gospel commission in Matthew 28:18-19 where Jesus announced, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth,” and then said, “Go therefore…” Jesus didn’t say GO on His own authority—but the authority of the entire Trinity! That makes our work of telling others about Jesus even more important. Then Brian shared from the Church Manuel that . . . “the most important work of the Church Board was to promote evangelism.” Our Church Board should help support and encourage every member--from our youngest to our oldest--to share Jesus with others.

·         The budget and the minutes of the last board meeting were approved.
·         Reports from the various church departments were given.
·         The Board voted a small stipend to assist a young adult with expenses to attend the Young Adult Leadership Training on Oahu the weekend of Jan. 18-19, and stipends to help church children attend Summer Camp, who would otherwise not be able to attend.
·         The Kahili Adventist School Principal and Home & School Leader discussed what’s happening at Kahili. It was agreed to plan a Sabbath at Lawai Valley where the PBS film on Adventist Education can be shown and Roger Brodis (principal) can answer questions.
·         A Pancake breakfast sponsored by the Juniors is being planned to raise money for the church roof.
·         A report was given on the construction plans for fixing the church roof.

What You Can Do for Your Church Board?
Pray that the members will be given Holy Spirit insight so their decisions will effectively promote sharing the gospel here on Kauai.

Your email address was obtained through the Church Directory. If you want to opt out or add another address, just let me know.

Thank you, Auntie Lyn for your  fresh “Our daily bread” Thanksgiving display. Yum! It smelled so good and reminded us that Jesus and His Word is our  daily Bread of Life.

Christmas Gifts for Lawai Valley Kids
Would you (or your kids) like to say thank you to Cora DeGuzman? She visited our church a couple weeks before Christmas (thanks to the invitation and transportation of Geoffrey Waldrop.) She was so impressed with the children and their participation in the service that she went back home to NY and decided to send Christmas gifts to all of them. Her gifts were especially selected and wrapped for each child. She sent them 2-day airmail from NY and they arrived the day before Christmas. Thanks to Uncle Brian and Anthony Keen the gifts were delivered by Christmas Eve! I’m sure she would love to hear from the children—or their parents. Here is her contact information: 845-553-5630: cdeguzman@lawrencehealth.org
